Painter jobs in Australia for Nigerians: prove your years before a sponsor asks
Tips · 2026-11-07 · 8 min read

Painter jobs in Australia for Nigerians start with paperwork, not a flight: a sponsoring employer and the Department of Home Affairs both look for proof of how long you have worked as a painter and decorator, and in what kind of jobs. A 482 sponsored role needs at least 1 year of relevant experience gained within the last 5 years. If your years are on walls but not on paper, fix that first.
Check where painting sits on the occupation list
The Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482) lets an employer sponsor a suitably skilled worker to fill a position they cannot fill locally. In the Core Skills stream, the worker must be nominated for an occupation on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL). Our Skills in Demand (482) visa guide explains the stream in plain words.
For a painter, the first job is a lookup. Open the combined list of eligible skilled occupations and search for painting and decorating. It shows whether the occupation is on the CSOL, the MLTSSL, the STSOL or the ROL, and it names the skills assessing authority. Write down what you see and the date you saw it.
Why your painting years need proof
Home Affairs says part-time or casual work must add up to at least 12 months full-time. A painter in Abuja or Ibadan who works job to job, paid in cash by different site owners, can easily have the experience and no record of it. That gap is the real risk.
Each assessing authority sets its own procedures, timeframes and charges, so ask which evidence it wants before you collect anything. As a starting point, gather what could show the work:
| Evidence to gather | What it can show | How to get it |
|---|---|---|
| Letters from past site owners or contractors | Dates, type of work and your role | Ask each one, on their letterhead where they have one, with a phone number |
| Payment records | That the work was paid, and when | Bank transfers, receipts and invoices you kept |
| Dated photos of finished jobs | The range of work: interior, exterior, texture finishes | Your phone gallery, with the date and location written beside each set |
| Trade training certificates | Formal learning behind the years | Your school or training centre, original and copies |
| Passport and NIN slip | That you are the person named in every record | Keep the passport biodata page and NIN slip with the file |
The same habit helped in our guides for carpenters and bricklayers: build a dated record now, while the people who can vouch for you are still reachable.
Build a painter's evidence file in six steps
- List every job since your first paid painting work, with month, year, town and what you did.
- Mark the years that fall inside the last 5, because the 482 experience rule counts that window.
- Ask for a letter for each of those jobs and photograph any finished work you still can.
- Scan every paper and name the files by date, so one job is one folder.
- Look up the occupation on the combined list and note the assessing authority and its own page on evidence.
- Only then search for sponsors, and tell each one your records are ready.
If you want a recognised qualification as well, RPLDirect lists the Certificate III in Painting and Decorating on its qualification pages. Read what it involves before deciding; it does not replace an assessment or a visa.
Pay floor and English test for a sponsored painter
The sponsor must pay the Annual Market Salary Rate for the occupation and no less than the Core Skills Income Threshold. For nomination applications lodged from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027, that threshold is AUD79,423. We cannot tell you the market rate for painters here, so ask any sponsor which rate the nomination will use.
| English test | Minimum for the 482 Core Skills stream (tests from 13 September 2025) |
|---|---|
| IELTS Academic or General Training | 5.0 in each of listening, reading, writing and speaking |
| PTE Academic | Listening 33, Reading 36, Writing 29, Speaking 24 |
| Other tests and exemptions | Check the official English page before you book |
Start your CV early too. A one-page trade CV listing jobs, dates and finishes is easier to write with Build AI CV than from memory on the night an employer asks for it.
Police certificate and medical, in the right order
Home Affairs may ask for a police certificate from every country you lived in, usually if you are over 17 and lived there for at least 12 months in the past 10 years. For Nigeria that is the Police Character Certificate, requested through POSSAP. The NPF says it takes 5-7 working days from complete documents, with an express service of 2-3 working days at extra cost. Read why posted requests stall if you are outside Nigeria.
Health examinations outside Australia must be done by an approved panel physician or clinic, and you need a HAP ID to book. Do not book either step until you have a real offer and the visa process has told you what to provide.
Common mistakes Nigerian painters make
- Counting years without records. Twelve good years on site mean little to an assessor if nothing is dated.
- Paying for a "sponsorship". Paying an employer to sponsor you is illegal and can cost you the visa. Read which agent fees are real and which are a red flag.
- Assuming the list status. Painting may not sit where a friend says it does, so check it on the official page yourself.
- Starting the assessment after lodging. A mandatory skills assessment must be started before the visa application is lodged or the application is not valid.
- Skipping the other trades' lessons. The evidence habits in our welder guide apply to painters too.

Frequently asked questions
Is painting on the Australian skilled occupation list?
The combined list of eligible skilled occupations is where Home Affairs shows whether an occupation is on the CSOL, MLTSSL, STSOL or ROL and which authority assesses it. Look up painting and decorating there on the day you plan, because lists change. Do not rely on a friend, an agent or a social media post for this answer.
Do I need a skills assessment as a painter?
Some primary 482 applicants must have a mandatory skills assessment from Trades Recognition Australia or VETASSESS, depending on the occupation, and it must be started before the visa application is lodged. Whether yours is one of them depends on the occupation and your situation, so check the list entry and the assessing authority's own page.
How much experience does the 482 visa ask for?
Applicants need at least 1 year of relevant work experience in the nominated occupation or a related field, gained within the last 5 years. Part-time or casual work has to add up to at least 12 months full-time. That is why dated records of each job matter more than a long list of past sites.
Can I pay an Australian employer to sponsor me?
No. It is illegal to pay an employer to sponsor you for a visa, including through salary deductions, and doing so can lead to visa refusal or cancellation, fines or imprisonment. Anyone who asks you for a sponsorship fee is asking you to break the rules.
Do Nigerian painters need an English test?
For the 482 Core Skills stream, tests taken on or after 13 September 2025 need an IELTS minimum of 5.0 in each of listening, reading, writing and speaking, or PTE Academic scores of at least Listening 33, Reading 36, Writing 29 and Speaking 24. Check the official English page for exemptions and other accepted tests before you book.
Which police certificate do I need from Nigeria?
Home Affairs names the Nigerian document as the Police Character Certificate, which Nigerian citizens request through a POSSAP account. Home Affairs may ask for a certificate from every country you lived in for at least 12 months in the past 10 years, if you are over 17.
Key takeaways
- Look up painting on the combined list of eligible skilled occupations and note the assessing authority.
- Gather dated letters, payment records and photos for every job in the last 5 years.

- Book English test, police certificate and medical only when the process asks for them.
