Mechanic jobs in Australia for Nigerians: workshop years may not count without proof
Tips · 2026-11-05 · 8 min read

Mechanic jobs in Australia for Nigerians are open to workers who have an employer ready to sponsor them, but the hard part is rarely the spanner work. It is proving, on paper, the years you spent in a roadside or workshop setting where nothing was written down. A sponsor and the Department of Home Affairs judge you on evidence, so start collecting it before you apply for anything.
Why workshop years are the hard part
Many Nigerian mechanics learned the trade by apprenticeship under a master mechanic in a workshop in Ladipo, Apapa or a neighbourhood garage. That is real skill. The problem is that it often leaves no payslip, no contract and no certificate, and Australian processes lean on documents.
The Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482) lets an employer sponsor a suitably skilled worker for a position they cannot fill locally. Under the Core Skills stream the worker must be nominated for an occupation on the Core Skills Occupation List, and be paid the market salary for the job and no less than the Core Skills Income Threshold. For nominations lodged between 1 July 2026 and 30 June 2027 that threshold is AUD79,423.
Applicants also need at least 1 year of relevant work experience in the nominated occupation or a related field, gained within the last 5 years. Part-time or casual work must add up to at least 12 months full-time. Our Skills in Demand (482) visa guide for Nigerians sets out the whole visa in plain words.
What the sponsor and Home Affairs look at
| Requirement | What it means for a mechanic |
|---|---|
| Occupation on the skilled list | Your job must match an occupation on the combined list of eligible skilled occupations. Check its list status and its assessing authority there. |
| Relevant experience | At least 1 year in the nominated occupation or a related field, within the last 5 years. |
| Skills assessment | Some primary applicants need a mandatory assessment, by Trades Recognition Australia or VETASSESS depending on the occupation. It must be started before the visa application is lodged. |
| Salary | The market rate for the job, and no less than AUD79,423 for nominations lodged between 1 July 2026 and 30 June 2027. |
| English | IELTS 5.0 in each of listening, reading, writing and speaking, or PTE Academic Listening 33, Reading 36, Writing 29 and Speaking 24, for tests taken on or after 13 September 2025. |
The Department publishes the combined list of eligible skilled occupations. It shows whether an occupation sits on the Core Skills Occupation List, the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List, the Short-term Skilled Occupation List or the Regional Occupation List, and it names the assessing authority. Do not guess your list status from a job title you saw advertised.
Build your evidence file before you apply
A skills assessing authority checks that a person's skills meet the standards it sets for the occupation, and Home Affairs only accepts an assessment from the relevant authority. Each authority has its own procedures, timeframes and charges, so read its requirements first and then build your file around them. Do not assume a document will be accepted until you have checked.
Start with whatever you can honestly produce:
- Any trade certificate or training record, even from a short course.
- Letters from the workshop owners you worked for, saying your dates, your duties and the vehicles you worked on.
- Bank or mobile-money records that show regular payment for the work.
- Dated photographs of jobs you completed, such as an engine rebuild or a brake overhaul.
- Names and phone numbers of people who can confirm your work if the assessor or sponsor asks.
Only include what is true. Never buy a certificate or a reference letter: it can end a visa application, and it will be found out when the employer tests your skills.
Write your CV around the same duties. A clear, employer-ready CV helps a sponsor see what you did, and the Build AI CV builder can help you set out workshop experience in a clean format.
From workshop to job offer: the steps
- Find the occupation that matches your daily work on the combined list, and note its assessing authority.
- Gather your evidence file and put your dates in order, so each year of work is covered.
- Check how the authority wants experience shown, and whether your route needs an assessment before the visa application is lodged.
- Book an English test if the visa or employer asks for one.
- Apply for roles through the sponsored jobs list and email your CV with any trade certificates. For example, our Auto Accessories Fitter role in Melbourne shows how an automotive role is advertised.
- If an employer shortlists you, expect a video interview, and for some jobs a practical test.
- When the employer offers the role, they sponsor the work visa while you prepare your own documents for the application.
Applying through us does not mean an interview, a job offer or sponsorship is certain, and only the Australian government decides whether a visa is granted.
Papers to sort out at home
Home Affairs may ask for a police certificate from every country you lived in, usually if you are over 17 and lived there for at least 12 months in the past 10 years. In Nigeria that is the Police Character Certificate, issued by the Nigeria Police Force. Read our guide on getting a Nigerian police certificate when you are abroad if you are not in the country, and the full list of documents needed to relocate to Australia.
The Police Character Certificate takes 5-7 working days from submission of complete documents, with an express service of 2-3 working days at additional cost. The Nigeria Police Force lists the steps on its Character Certificate page.
Health examinations outside Australia must be done by an approved panel physician or clinic, and a HAP ID is needed to book. Home Affairs lists panel physicians in Nigeria in Lagos, Abuja and Enugu: see the approved clinics in Lagos, Abuja and Enugu. All non-English documents must be translated into English, and you provide both the original and the translation.
How this differs from other trades
If you came to mechanics through diesel and haulage work, our diesel mechanic guide covers that route. The proof problem is the same for builders: see how carpenters tackle it in turning site experience into proof an assessor accepts. If your skills are solid but your paperwork is thin, RPLDirect explains how recognition of prior learning can turn experience into a nationally recognised qualification. A qualification does not by itself give you a visa or a job.
Common mistakes
- Paying for a job. It is illegal for a person to pay an employer to sponsor them for a visa, including through salary deductions, and it can lead to visa refusal or cancellation, fines or imprisonment. The EFCC says no credible employer demands pre-employment payments. Read the Home Affairs rules on the cost of sponsoring.
- Starting the assessment too late. Where a mandatory assessment applies, it must be started before the visa application is lodged, or the application is not valid.
- Counting years that cannot be shown. Experience you cannot support with evidence is hard for anyone to rely on.
- Guessing the occupation. Choose the occupation that matches your real duties, not the one that looks easiest.
- Ignoring the salary floor. Check the pay on offer against the market rate and the threshold for the occupation.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a mechanic job in Australia without a certificate?
A certificate is not the only form of evidence, but you still need to show the experience the visa requires. Check the assessing authority for your occupation and ask what it wants for experience gained without formal training.
Does the employer pay for my visa sponsorship?
It is illegal for a person to pay an employer to sponsor them for a visa, including through salary deductions. Anyone who asks you for money to secure a job is a red flag, and the EFCC advises you to disregard any offer once a request for money is made.
How much must a sponsored mechanic be paid?
The worker must be paid the market rate for the occupation and no less than the Core Skills Income Threshold. For nominations lodged between 1 July 2026 and 30 June 2027 the threshold is AUD79,423.
Do I need an English test as a mechanic?
For the Core Skills stream, tests taken on or after 13 September 2025 need IELTS 5.0 in each skill, or the PTE Academic scores of Listening 33, Reading 36, Writing 29 and Speaking 24. Check the English page on the Home Affairs site for your own case.
Will NaijaAbroad get me a mechanic job?
No. Applying through NaijaAbroad does not make an interview, a job offer or employer sponsorship certain, and only the government decides whether a visa is granted. Nothing here is migration or legal advice.
