Bricklayer jobs in Australia for Nigerians: what your block work proves, and what to learn first

Bricklayer jobs in Australia for Nigerians are a real option, but only through an employer willing to sponsor you, and only if you can prove the trade on paper. Years of laying sandcrete blocks in Lagos, Abuja or Port Harcourt count as experience. What a sponsor and the Department of Home Affairs need is evidence they can check, an occupation on the right list, and a worker ready to learn local methods.

From sandcrete blocks to Australian brick and block work

Most Nigerian masons learn on block walls: setting out, mixing mortar, keeping courses level and plumb, and moving fast with a labourer team. Those skills travel. A straight, strong wall built to a line is the same job in Enugu or in Perth.

What changes is the detail. An Australian builder may want face brick that stays visible, so clean joints matter as much as strength. Wall ties, damp courses, control joints and the plans themselves follow Australian rules, and the employer expects you to work from drawings, not only from a foreman's word.

A mason who also plasters and tiles is valuable on a Nigerian site, but an Australian sponsor nominates one occupation, and your proof has to match that one.

Where bricklaying sits in Australia's visa system

The Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482) lets an employer sponsor a suitably skilled worker for a role they cannot fill with a suitably skilled Australian. In the Core Skills stream, the occupation must be on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL), and the worker must be paid the market salary for the role and no less than the Core Skills Income Threshold. Our 482 visa guide for Nigerians covers the visa in full.

Ignore WhatsApp flyers that say "bricklayers wanted, visa ready". Open the combined list of eligible skilled occupations on the Home Affairs website and search for Bricklayer. It shows which lists the occupation is on (CSOL, MLTSSL, STSOL or ROL) and names its skills assessing authority. Check it again just before you apply, because lists are reviewed.

On a 482 visa you may work only in the occupation you were nominated for and only for the business that nominated you, for up to 4 years. Your employer may later be able to sponsor you for permanent residence through the Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186). Its Temporary Residence Transition stream is for 482 holders who have usually worked at least 2 years full time in sponsored employment and are usually under 45 when they apply.

The subclass 494 regional visa needs a nomination, at least 3 years of relevant experience, a skills assessment and an age under 45 unless exemptions apply, and its designated regional areas cover all of Australia except Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Holders may, if eligible, apply for permanent residence after 3 years. Our report on only seven bricklaying apprentices in the ACT shows why some areas cannot train enough bricklayers locally, and PinoyAbroad's look at Canberra's bricklayer shortage covers the same gap for Filipino tradespeople.

What the 2026-27 program year means for you

For the 2026-27 program year, which runs from 1 July to 30 June, the government set the Employer-Sponsored planning level at 58,040 places, up from 44,000 in 2025-26. More places still mean you need an employer who nominates you.

The skills assessment: proof, not promises

A skills assessing authority checks that your skills meet its standard for the occupation, and Home Affairs only accepts an assessment from the authority named for that occupation. Each authority sets its own procedures, timeframes and charges, so read its pages yourself.

For some 482 applicants the assessment is mandatory. It is done by Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) or VETASSESS, depending on the occupation, and it must be started before the visa application is lodged, or that application is not valid. It must also have been undertaken or commenced within the 3 years before you apply.

TRA's Migration Skills Assessment is a documentary assessment that compares your qualifications and employment history with Australian standards, for occupations and countries not covered by TRA's other programs. Because TRA runs several programs, confirm on its website which one applies to a bricklayer holding a Nigerian passport before you gather anything. TRA does not award Australian qualifications, registrations or licences: a positive outcome supports a visa, nothing more.

Turning cash-paid block work into evidence

Many masons at home were paid daily by a contractor or site engineer, with no payslip. That experience is still yours, but an assessor only sees what you can document. Start a folder now:

  • One signed letter per builder or contractor, from someone who can be contacted, stating your start and end dates, days worked each week and the tasks you did: setting out, laying, pointing, cutting and reading plans.
  • Bank records that show the wages arriving, or the receipts and contract papers you kept for private jobs.
  • Dated photos of walls you built, with the project and town noted on a separate list.
  • Any trade test or training certificate, with an English translation for anything not in English.

If you want to see how an experienced worker's skills map to the Australian bricklaying qualification once in the country, RPLDirect's page on the Certificate III in Bricklaying and Blocklaying explains recognition of prior learning for that course. It is a separate step from the migration skills assessment.

A short video introducing you and your trade can sit next to your CV; SelfIntroVideo is built for planning and recording that kind of short self-introduction on a phone.

Pay: the visa threshold and the award

For 482 nominations lodged between 1 July 2026 and 30 June 2027, the Core Skills Income Threshold is AUD79,423 a year. Roughly, using the official US dollar rates of 16 October 2026 (the Reserve Bank of Australia's 0.6947 US dollars per Australian dollar and the Central Bank of Nigeria's central rate of 1331.7582 naira per dollar), that is about N73,480,000 a year. It is a rough comparison only: rates change daily.

The Building and Construction General On-site Award also sets minimum rates. With amendments up to 1 July 2026, its Level 3 classification (CW/ECW 3) is $30.38 an hour or $1154.40 a week. Award rates rose 4.75 per cent from 1 July 2026. Ask any employer which classification your offer uses and check it, because most employees' minimum wage comes from the award for their industry or occupation. Visa holders have the same workplace rights as everyone else.

Your step-by-step plan as a Nigerian bricklayer

  1. Check Bricklayer on the combined list and write down its lists and assessing authority.
  2. Read that authority's pages for your passport country and list every document it asks for.
  3. Gather letters, payment records and photos for your recent jobs. The 482 needs at least 1 year of relevant experience within the last 5 years, and part-time or casual work must add up to 12 months full-time.
  4. Book an accepted English test at a test centre if your visa needs one.
  5. Apply only to employers who state that they sponsor. Live trade roles such as this advanced scaffolder job in Geraldton show how sponsoring builders describe what they need.
  6. When an employer offers the role and nominates you, make sure any mandatory skills assessment is started before the visa is lodged.
  7. Get your Police Character Certificate and visa medical close to lodging, so neither expires.
  8. Lodge only through ImmiAccount, and check any grant in VEVO.

You may not need an English test at all. 482 applicants are exempt if they completed at least 5 years of full-time study at a secondary or higher institution where most classes were in English, so check that rule against your school records first. If you do sit IELTS or PTE, PractiseNow lets you practise the test format before you pay for the real one.

The Police Character Certificate takes, the Nigeria Police Force states, 5-7 working days once your documents are complete, with an express service of 2-3 working days at extra cost. For the medical, see our list of approved visa medical clinics in Lagos, Abuja and Enugu, and our checklist of japa documents in the right order.

Common mistakes Nigerian bricklayers make

  • Paying for a sponsor. It is illegal to pay an employer to sponsor you, including through salary deductions, and it can lead to visa refusal or cancellation, fines or prison. The EFCC warns that no credible employer demands pre-employment payments.
  • Trusting a "japa consultant" without checking. Anyone giving immigration help with an Australian visa must be a registered migration agent, a legal practitioner or an exempt person. See how to check two registers before you pay.
  • Getting the police certificate too early. It is valid for 12 months, and an expired one means paying and waiting again.
  • Buying a "work permit". Australia does not issue work permits, so anyone selling one is running a scam, and anyone promising you a visa is misleading you.

Carpenters face many of the same hurdles; our guide to carpenter jobs in Australia for Nigerians is worth reading if you work across both trades.

Frequently asked questions

Is bricklaying on Australia's skilled occupation list?

Check the combined list of eligible skilled occupations on the Home Affairs website. It shows whether Bricklayer is on the CSOL, MLTSSL, STSOL or ROL and names the assessing authority.

Can cash-paid work in Nigeria count as bricklaying experience?

Yes, if you can document it. Signed letters from builders, bank records of wages and dated photos help an assessor see what you did. The 482 needs at least 1 year of relevant experience within the last 5 years.

How much does a sponsored bricklayer earn in Australia?

A 482 Core Skills worker must be paid the market salary for the role and no less than AUD79,423 a year for nominations lodged from 1 July 2026.

Can my family come with me on a 482 visa?

Yes. You can include your partner and dependent children in the application, and they can live, study and work in Australia.

Do I apply at the Australian High Commission in Abuja?

No. The High Commission in Nigeria does not process visa applications. Visas are handled by the Department of Home Affairs and lodged through ImmiAccount, the only official website for applying.
