Carpenter jobs in Australia for Nigerians: turn your site experience into proof an assessor accepts

Nigerian carpenter measures and marks a timber wall frame while a colleague steadies it on an Australian building site.

Carpenter jobs in Australia for Nigerians are real, but a sponsor and the Department of Home Affairs judge you on proof, not on years of saying "I have done plenty sites". To be ready, you need your occupation's status on the official list, at least 1 year of recent paid experience you can document, a skills assessment when your occupation and visa require one, an English score, and clean police and medical checks. Here is how to turn informal site work in Lagos, Abuja or Port Harcourt into evidence an assessor can read.

What an Australian employer is really hiring

An Australian builder who sponsors a carpenter wants someone who can read drawings, frame, fix and finish to Australian standards from the first week. The Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482) lets an employer sponsor a suitably skilled worker for a role it cannot fill with a suitably skilled Australian.

So if you plan to japa as a carpenter, the employer comes first, and your evidence must match the occupation they nominate, not a general "construction worker" label. A 482 holder may work only in the nominated occupation and only for the sponsoring business (or, in some cases, an associated entity), for up to 4 years. So choose the occupation title carefully before anyone lodges anything.

Step one: check your occupation on the official list

Do not rely on WhatsApp lists of "trades in demand". Home Affairs publishes a combined list of eligible skilled occupations that shows whether an occupation is on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL), the MLTSSL, the STSOL or the Regional Occupation List, and names the skills assessing authority for it.

Search for the carpentry titles that fit what you actually do: general carpentry, joinery, or a related title if most of your work is formwork, roofing or fitted furniture. Note the list, the visas and the assessing authority for each.

For the 482 Core Skills stream, the occupation must be on the CSOL, and the employer must pay the market salary for the role and no less than the Core Skills Income Threshold. For nominations lodged from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027, that threshold is AUD79,423 a year. Roughly, using the official US dollar rates published in early October 2026 (the Reserve Bank of Australia's rate and the Central Bank of Nigeria's NFEM rate), that is about N73,600,000 a year. Exchange rates move every day, so treat that only as a rough comparison.

Turning Nigerian site experience into evidence

Plenty of skilled carpenters at home were paid in cash, worked for a contractor on a handshake, or moved from site to site with no payslip. That work still happened, but an assessor cannot see it unless you put it on paper.

Trades Recognition Australia describes its Migration Skills Assessment as a documentary assessment: it compares your qualifications and employment history with Australian standards. In plain words, documents carry the case. If the official list names a different authority for your title, follow that authority's own evidence list instead; each one has its own procedures, timeframes and charges.

Build a work history an assessor can follow

For every employer or contractor you worked for, aim to collect a letter on headed paper with full dates, hours per week, your job title and a clear list of the carpentry tasks you did. "He worked for us and was hardworking" proves nothing. "Set out and erected timber formwork for suspended slabs, installed roof trusses and fitted internal doors and frames" tells the assessor what you can do.

Back each letter with whatever proof of payment exists: bank statements showing regular wages, tax records or pay slips. Where you worked for yourself, keep invoices, receipts for materials and records from clients. Site photos can support the story, but they do not replace letters and payment records.

How much experience counts for the 482 visa

The 482 Core Skills stream asks for at least 1 year of relevant work experience in the nominated occupation or a related field, gained within the last 5 years. Part-time or casual work counts if it adds up to at least 12 months of full-time work.

For some occupations a skills assessment is mandatory, done by Trades Recognition Australia or VETASSESS, and it must be started before the visa application is lodged; otherwise the application is not valid. The assessment must also have been undertaken or started within the 3 years before you apply.

One more point: Trades Recognition Australia does not award Australian qualifications, registrations or licences. A positive assessment helps the visa; it does not, by itself, give you an Australian trade certificate. Readers who later want an Australian Certificate III in Carpentry based on experience can read how recognition of prior learning works for that qualification.

A practical order of work

The right order saves money and stops documents expiring before they are used:

  1. Check your carpentry title on the combined list: list status, visas and assessing authority.
  2. Gather reference letters and payment evidence for at least the last 5 years of work, and fix any name mismatches against your international passport.
  3. Book an IELTS or PTE test at a test centre and prepare for the 482 minimums: 5.0 in each IELTS band, or PTE Listening 33, Reading 36, Writing 29 and Speaking 24.
  4. Write an English CV that lists projects, tools and tasks in Australian terms, and start applying to employers who state they sponsor.
  5. Once an employer agrees to nominate you, start the skills assessment if your occupation requires one, before the visa is lodged.
  6. Apply for the Police Character Certificate and book the visa medical only when the visa application is close, so neither runs out.

The test must be within 3 years before you apply. For the CV, a tool like Build AI CV can help you turn site jobs into clear, task-based lines.

Police certificate and medical from Nigeria

Home Affairs may ask for a police certificate from every country you have lived in, usually if you are over 17 and lived there for at least 12 months in the past 10 years. From Nigeria, the accepted document is the Police Character Certificate issued by the Nigeria Police Force, which shows any convictions, pending charges or police cautions recorded in Nigeria.

You apply through the POSSAP portal using your NIN or BVN. The police say it takes 5-7 working days from complete documents, or 2-3 working days with the express service at extra cost. The certificate is valid for Australian visas for 12 months from the issue date and must cover the time from age 16, which is why timing matters.

The health examination must be done by a Home Affairs panel physician, and you need a HAP ID to book. Home Affairs lists panel physicians in Nigeria in Lagos, Abuja and Enugu; our guide to the approved visa medical clinics in Nigeria has the details, and the japa paperwork checklist covers your passport and school results.

Pay, rights and life on an Australian site

In Australia, most minimum wages are set by the award that covers the industry or occupation. On building sites that is usually the Building and Construction General On-site Award 2020, which sets minimum rates by level. Its Level 3 (CW/ECW 3) minimum is $1154.40 a week or $30.38 an hour from 1 July 2026; ask your employer which level your role is classified at, and remember that your sponsored salary also has to meet the visa threshold.

Visa holders have the same workplace rights as every other employee, and an employer cannot cancel your visa; only Home Affairs can.

Before your first shift, expect a site safety induction; each state sets its own rules, so ask your employer which one you need.

Common mistakes Nigerian carpenters make

  • Paying someone to "secure" a sponsor. It is illegal to pay an employer to sponsor you, including through salary deductions, and it can lead to refusal or cancellation of the visa, fines or prison. The EFCC also warns that no credible employer demands pre-employment payments.
  • Vague reference letters. A one-line letter from your former oga without dates, hours or tasks is close to useless for a documentary assessment.
  • Starting the skills assessment too late. Where it is mandatory for the 482, it must be started before lodging or the application is not valid.
  • Getting the police certificate too early. It lasts 12 months for Australian visas; getting it months before you have a sponsor can mean paying for a second one.
  • Booking an at-home English test. Home Affairs does not accept tests delivered entirely online.

Frequently asked questions

Can a carpenter without a trade certificate get a job in Australia?

It depends on the visa and the occupation, not only on the certificate. The subclass 482 Core Skills stream needs at least 1 year of relevant work experience in the last 5 years, and some applicants must also pass a skills assessment. The evidence list of the assessing authority decides whether informal experience counts.

Who assesses carpenters for an Australian visa?

The combined list of eligible skilled occupations on the Home Affairs website names the assessing authority for each occupation. For the 482 visa, a mandatory assessment is done by Trades Recognition Australia or VETASSESS, depending on the occupation.

What English score does a carpenter need for the 482 visa?

For tests taken on or after 13 September 2025, the 482 Core Skills stream asks for at least 5.0 in each IELTS band, or PTE Academic scores of Listening 33, Reading 36, Writing 29 and Speaking 24. Tests taken fully online at home are not accepted.

Should I pay an agent to find me a sponsor in Australia?

Never pay anyone to secure a sponsorship. Home Affairs says paying an employer to sponsor you is illegal and can lead to refusal or cancellation of the visa, fines or prison. The sponsoring employer must carry its own sponsorship and nomination costs and cannot pass them to you.

How long does the Nigerian police certificate take?

The Nigeria Police Force says a Police Character Certificate takes 5-7 working days from complete documents, or 2-3 working days with the express service at extra cost. You apply through POSSAP with your NIN or BVN, and the certificate is valid for Australian visas for 12 months from issue.
