Diesel mechanic jobs in Australia for Nigerians: turn your rig and haulage years into proof

Tips · 2026-11-04 · 8 min read

A determined Nigerian diesel mechanic holds a spanner beside his face with a truck engine behind him.

Diesel mechanic jobs in Australia for Nigerians are possible through employer sponsorship, but the visa side depends on the exact occupation your employer nominates, your evidence and the list in force on the day they lodge. If you have kept haulage trucks, generators or heavy plant running in the Niger Delta, you already hold the raw experience. The work now is turning it into proof an Australian employer and a Home Affairs officer can read.

What Australian employers mean by a diesel mechanic

In Australian job ads the same skills appear under several titles: diesel mechanic, heavy vehicle mechanic, plant mechanic, diesel fitter and truck mechanic. They cover trucks, buses, trailers, earthmoving gear, farm machinery and generator sets. Read the ad's duties, not just the title, because the nominated occupation drives the visa rules.

Our own sponsored jobs list shows how trade roles are advertised, for example this maintenance technician and fitter role in Bundaberg. Compare the duties there with what you do every day.

Map your Nigerian work to the Australian role

The table below shows how common Nigerian workshop and field tasks can be described in the words an assessor or employer expects. It is a way to organise your evidence, not a promise that any task will be accepted.

What you did in NigeriaHow to describe itEvidence to collect
Serviced haulage trucks and tankersScheduled servicing and repair of heavy commercial vehiclesEmployer letter, service logs, job cards
Kept generator sets running on siteDiagnosis and repair of diesel engines and generatorsReference letter, fault-finding records

Check the occupation list and the assessing authority first

Before anything else, search your occupation on the combined list of eligible skilled occupations. It shows whether the occupation is on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL), the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List, the Short-term Skilled Occupation List or the Regional Occupation List, and it names the skills assessing authority.

A skills assessing authority checks that your skills meet the standards it sets, and Home Affairs only accepts an assessment from the relevant authority. Each authority has its own procedures, timeframes and charges, so read them on its site. Trades Recognition Australia runs a documentary assessment that compares qualifications and employment history with Australian standards for skilled migration applicants in occupations not covered by its other programs. TRA does not award Australian qualifications, occupational registrations or licences.

Trade skills assessment is a topic of its own. MzansiAbroad has a useful read on whether a trade is on TRA's offshore list, written for South African tradespeople, and the process it describes is the same for any passport.

How the Skills in Demand (482) visa fits

The Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482) is a temporary visa that lets an employer sponsor a suitably skilled worker to fill a position they cannot fill locally. Our 482 visa guide for Nigerians covers the basics. For a trade role, the Core Skills stream is the usual reference point, and the official Core Skills stream page is where to check it.

  • The worker must be nominated for an occupation on the CSOL and paid the Annual Market Salary Rate for that occupation, and no less than the Core Skills Income Threshold.
  • Since 1 July 2026 that threshold is AUD79,423 for nominations lodged up to 30 June 2027. It is indexed each year from 1 July.
  • You need at least 1 year of relevant experience in the occupation or a related field, gained within the last 5 years.
  • The visa lets you work for your sponsor for up to 4 years, and only in the occupation you were nominated for.
  • You must begin employment within 90 days of entering Australia if you were outside Australia when the visa was granted.

An employer may later be able to sponsor a 482 holder for permanent residence through the Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186). Regional roles may use the subclass 494, which keeps you in designated regional areas for 5 years, and those areas include all of Australia except Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Many mine, farm and depot jobs sit outside the capitals.

English test and documents

For the 482 Core Skills stream, tests taken on or after 13 September 2025 need IELTS 5.0 in each of listening, reading, writing and speaking, or PTE Academic scores of Listening 33, Reading 36, Writing 29 and Speaking 24. If you need to prepare, PractiseNow offers English test practice.

Home Affairs may ask for a police certificate from every country you lived in, usually if you are over 17 and lived there for at least 12 months in the past 10 years. Read our guide to the Nigerian police clearance certificate before you start. Health examinations must be done by an approved panel physician.

Steps to take from Nigeria

  1. Write down your last five years of work: employer, dates, machines, tasks and who supervised you.
  2. Search your occupation on the combined list and note the list status and assessing authority.
  3. Ask each employer for a signed letter that matches your CV dates and duties.
  4. If the authority requires an assessment, start it before any visa application is lodged.
  5. Book an English test if your situation needs one, and apply for your Police Character Certificate on POSSAP.
  6. Apply for roles through the site, read each requirement closely and send your CV by email or WhatsApp.

Your CV needs to show machines, tasks and results in plain English. Build AI CV can help you structure it. If you want to see which Australian qualifications relate to your work, RPLDirect's page for the Certificate III in Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology shows the course and the job roles it links to.

Common mistakes

  • Paying for a job. It is illegal to pay an employer to sponsor you, and the Australian High Commission says no Australian diplomat or Border Force agent will contact you offering jobs or visas. Read our guide on which agent fees are real and which are a red flag.
  • Using a generic CV. A line like "mechanic, 8 years" says nothing. Name the machines and the tasks.
  • Starting the assessment late. If a mandatory assessment is needed and was not started before lodgement, the application is not valid.
  • Assuming the title decides the visa. The nominated occupation and its list status decide the rules, so check the list.
  • Trusting a visit visa. A visitor visa does not let you work. Read about the visit visa work contract trap.

Frequently asked questions

Is diesel mechanic on the list for the Skills in Demand visa?

That depends on the occupation your employer nominates and on the list in force when they lodge. Open the combined list of eligible skilled occupations on the Home Affairs site, search the occupation, and read its list status and assessing authority. Do not rely on a recruiter or a forum post for this.

Do I need a skills assessment as a diesel mechanic?

Some primary 482 applicants must have a mandatory assessment, by Trades Recognition Australia or VETASSESS depending on the occupation, and it must be started before the visa application is lodged. The combined list names the authority for your occupation. If it says assessment is needed, start early because lodging without it makes the application invalid.

Can I count my oil and gas and haulage years as experience?

The 482 asks for at least 1 year of relevant work in the nominated occupation or a related field, gained within the last 5 years. Experience in a related field can count, but your evidence has to show what you actually did. Employer letters, payslips and job descriptions should match the Australian role.

Should I pay an agent or an employer to get me a mechanic job?

No. It is illegal to pay an employer to sponsor you for a visa, including through salary deductions, and doing so can lead to visa refusal or cancellation, fines or imprisonment. Walk away from anyone who asks for money before an offer or promises a visa.

Do I need IELTS or PTE for a diesel mechanic job?

The 482 Core Skills stream has English minimums for tests taken on or after 13 September 2025: IELTS 5.0 in each band, or PTE Academic with Listening 33, Reading 36, Writing 29 and Speaking 24. Some applicants may be exempt, so read the Home Affairs English page for your passport and situation before booking a test.

Where do I get a police certificate in Nigeria?

You apply for the Police Character Certificate through the POSSAP portal. The Nigeria Police Force says it takes 5-7 working days from complete documents, with an express service of 2-3 working days at extra cost. Home Affairs may ask for one if you lived in Nigeria for at least 12 months in the past 10 years.

Key takeaways

  • Employers name the role; the nominated occupation and its list status decide the visa rules.
  • Search the combined list first and note the assessing authority.
  • Build evidence of machines, tasks and dates from the last 5 years.
  • Never pay anyone to secure sponsorship or a job.
  • Start any mandatory skills assessment before a visa application is lodged.
