Renew a Nigerian passport abroad: the $150 and $230 fees, and where Nigerians in Australia and NZ apply
Tips · 2026-11-01 · 7 min read

If your Nigerian passport is close to expiry while you work in Australia or New Zealand, you do not wait for a trip home: the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) says Nigerians in the diaspora submit passport applications at the nearest Nigeria Embassy, High Commission or Consulate. The NIS lists the standard fee as $150 for a 32-page, 5-year passport and $230 for a 64-page, 10-year passport, before bank charges. Read this before you pay anyone, book leave or send a document by post.
What the NIS publishes about fees
The NIS service level agreement for 2026 lists the standard passport fee in naira and dollars side by side. Bank charges are not included in either figure.
| Passport | Pages | Validity | Fee in naira | Fee in dollars |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard, shorter | 32 | 5 years | N100,000 | $150 |
| Standard, longer | 64 | 10 years | N200,000 | $230 |
| Bank charges | Not applicable | Not applicable | Extra | Extra |
The naira fees for applicants inside Nigeria took effect on 1 September 2025, after the NIS announced them on 28 August 2025. If you want the home-country version of this story, our post on the N100,000 or N200,000 passport choice covers which booklet suits a work move.
One honest limit: the NIS page gives the dollar figures but does not say which payment method each mission accepts, or whether a mission adds its own handling charge. Ask your mission in writing before you pay, and keep the reply.
Where Nigerians in Australia and New Zealand apply
The rule is the nearest mission, not a visit to Abuja and not a private "passport processor". For New Zealand, the New Zealand government's own page says the Nigerian High Commission accredited to New Zealand is at 26 Guilfoyle Street, Yarralumla, Australia. That means a Nigerian in Auckland or Christchurch deals with a mission across the Tasman rather than one in New Zealand. Read the New Zealand government's page on that High Commission for the current listing.
For Nigerians living in Australia, the same NIS rule applies: the nearest Nigeria Embassy, High Commission or Consulate. Check the mission's own notice for opening days, appointments and how it takes biometrics before you travel.
What the NIS asks for on a fresh application
The NIS page we rely on lists documents for a fresh standard passport application or change of data. It does not publish a separate renewal checklist, so treat the list below as the baseline and ask your mission what it wants for a renewal.
- A NIN slip (your National Identification Number).
- A birth certificate, or a declaration of age from a High Court.
- A Local Government or indigene certificate.
- An ICAO-compliant passport photograph.
- Your own presence for the photograph and biometric capture.
The in-person rule matters for anyone planning to renew through a friend or relative: the NIS says the applicant must appear for the photograph and biometrics. A relative can help with paperwork back home, but cannot stand in for you at the mission. The NIS service level agreement is the page to read yourself.
How long it can take
The 2026 service level agreement gives 42 days after successful enrolment for a fresh standard passport application or change of data. Two cautions apply to anyone abroad. First, the clock starts after enrolment, not on the day you book or post anything. Second, the page does not say whether missions outside Nigeria follow the same timeline, so plan with room to spare and never book a flight or a visa lodgement date that depends on the new passport arriving.
Step by step: renewing from Australia or New Zealand
- Look at the passport you hold now and note its expiry date, then work backwards from any visa application, sponsor deadline or trip.
- Find your nearest Nigeria Embassy, High Commission or Consulate and read its own instructions. For New Zealand that is the mission in Yarralumla listed above.
- Gather the documents in the list above, plus anything the mission adds for renewals. Ask for the extra items in writing.
- Choose the 32-page, 5-year booklet or the 64-page, 10-year booklet, and confirm the dollar fee and the payment method with the mission.
- Attend in person for the photograph and biometric capture, and keep every receipt and reference number.
- Track the application only through the mission or the NIS, never through an intermediary who offers to speed it up.
Why this matters for a work visa
Employers and visa applications ask for identity documents, and a passport that is about to expire can hold up your plans. Our guides to the Australian Skills in Demand (482) visa and the New Zealand AEWV explain what those routes involve, and our list of documents needed to relocate to Australia from Nigeria shows where the passport sits in the paperwork order. Check the official visa pages for any passport validity rule before you lodge.
While the passport is being processed, it is a sensible time to update your CV. A tool such as Build AI CV can help you tidy it, and the jobs on our community services and manufacturing pages show the kind of roles employers list.
A police certificate is a separate job
Many visa applications also ask for a police certificate, and that is a different document from a passport. The Nigeria Police Force issues the Police Character Certificate, and Home Affairs says mailed requests are not an effective way to get one from abroad. Our post on the Nigerian police clearance certificate from abroad explains what works, and the Nigeria Police Force's character certificate page lists its documents. Start both processes early, because they run on different timelines.
Common mistakes
- Paying a fixer. The EFCC warns that no credible employer demands pre-employment payments, and that visa scammers claim embassy connections and demand repeated fees. The same caution fits anyone who says they can get you a passport faster. Read our guide on which fees are real and which are a red flag.
- Confusing the naira and dollar fees. The naira figures apply to applicants in Nigeria; abroad you should ask the mission what it charges and in which currency.
- Assuming renewal needs the same papers as a first passport. The NIS page lists fresh-application documents only, so confirm the renewal list.
- Forgetting bank charges. The listed fees are exclusive of them.
- Booking travel around the 42 days. That figure is after enrolment and is stated for fresh applications and data changes.
- Sending originals by post without asking. Ask the mission whether it accepts posted documents at all.
