Sous Chef

Visa sponsorship

Hospitality · Whangarei, New Zealand · Full-Time · $35/hr · Visa: Employer sponsored

Here is a straightforward step up for an experienced chef: a Sous Chef position in a busy, long-established restaurant on the Northland waterfront in New Zealand. The kitchen is known for fresh flavours, good local ingredients and relaxed dining, and it needs a strong second in command.

You will work directly with the Executive Chef, lead the cooks with them, keep quality consistent and keep operations steady when the dining room is full. The contract is permanent or fixed-term and covers no less than 30 hours each week. Preference goes to applicants with New Zealand work eligibility, but sponsorship may be considered.

Make your CV do the talking. State the kitchens you have run shifts in, the size of the crews you supervised and how you handled stock and rosters. Create a job-ready chef CV on Build AI CV.

Key Responsibilities

  • Take full control when the Executive Chef is off, and brief every chef on what each day demands
  • Manage stock so supplies never run short or drop in standard
  • Keep staff timetables, leave rosters and attendance registers accurate
  • Hold the kitchen to hygiene regulations, flag maintenance faults and chase them until fixed
  • Keep the floor team and the kitchen working from the same information
  • Sign off each plate on portion, look, quality and temperature before it goes out
  • Train staff on the job regularly and deal with everyone fairly and courteously

Requirements & Eligibility

  • Solid experience in a busy kitchen with high standards for quality
  • Already a Sous Chef, or ready to step up into the role
  • Strong leadership skills and the drive to motivate a team
  • A genuine passion for great food and consistency
  • Excellent organisation skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • A cool head under busy conditions, plus a positive attitude, good work ethic and sense of humour
