Australian High Commission Abuja doesn't handle visas: where Nigerians should go instead

Tips · 2026-10-23 · 10 min read

A Nigerian couple checks a laptop at their Lagos dining table, with a phone and notebook beside them.

The Australian High Commission in Abuja does not process visa or citizenship applications. Your Australian visa is handled by the Department of Home Affairs, you lodge it online through ImmiAccount, and visa questions go to the Home Affairs Global Service Centre on +61 2 6196 0196. New Zealand has no visa desk in Nigeria either: its Embassy in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia covers Nigeria, and work visas are applied for online.

That sounds simple, yet many applicants still lose weeks, and sometimes money, trying to reach "the embassy" about a file it never sees. This guide sets out who does what, which number to call for which problem, and the order to approach each office in.

What the High Commission in Abuja is, and what it is not

Most people in Nigeria say "the Australian embassy". The office is in fact a High Commission, and it sits in Abuja, not Lagos.

Its own travel page is direct about visas: the High Commission in Nigeria does not process visa or citizenship applications. Those are managed by the Department of Home Affairs and lodged through ImmiAccount. You can read that on the High Commission's travelling to Australia page.

So there is no counter in Abuja where you hand in a visa file, no officer there who can speed up a decision, and no point posting your documents to the mission. Anyone who says they have "a contact at the High Commission" who can push your file is describing a service that does not exist.

How to reach the High Commission when you do need it

The High Commission publishes these contact details on its contact us page: phone +234 (0)20 9460 6960, mobile +234 906 540 5487, and the postal address PMB 5152 Wuse, Abuja 900288, Nigeria.

For a genuine emergency involving an Australian, the 24-hour Consular Emergency Centre in Canberra answers on +61 2 6261 3305. That line is for consular emergencies, not for visa progress questions.

Who actually decides your Australian visa

Every Australian visa decision is made by the Department of Home Affairs. ImmiAccount is the only official website for applying for an Australian visa, so your application, your uploads and any requests for more information all live there.

Once a visa is granted, you can check it in VEVO, the government's visa checking system. Home Affairs says a visa grant that cannot be found in VEVO is probably fake. That one check protects you from the worst kind of japa disappointment: arriving at the airport with a "visa" that was never issued.

Home Affairs is also clear that only it decides. Anyone promising you a visa, permanent residency or citizenship is misleading you, whatever office they claim to work with.

Visa questions: the Global Service Centre

The High Commission sends visa enquiries to the Home Affairs Global Service Centre on +61 2 6196 0196. Before you call, have your ImmiAccount reference, your passport number and the exact question written down, because it is an international call and you want it short.

Biometrics: the one step you may do in person

The High Commission says visa applicants may be required to provide biometric identifiers, meaning a digital facial image and a fingerprint scan. If you are asked for them, follow the official instructions you are given. Nothing on the High Commission's pages suggests you can arrange biometrics by walking into its office.

The Lagos honorary consul is not a visa office

Lagos applicants often ask whether there is an Australian visa office in Lagos. Australia has an Honorary Consul in Lagos, at Union Marble House, 1 Alfred Rewane Road, Falomo, Ikoyi. The High Commission states plainly that the Honorary Consul does not process visa requests.

So a trip to Ikoyi with your file will not help your application. Upload everything to ImmiAccount instead, and keep copies on your phone and in your email.

Which office handles what: a quick reference

Save this table before you start. Each row is the official place for one job, so you never chase the wrong office.

The medical row matters more than most people expect. Only clinics on the approved panel list count, and our guide to Australia visa medical clinics in Lagos, Abuja and Enugu names every one of them.

New Zealand: which embassy covers Nigeria

New Zealand does not run its Nigerian affairs from Abuja or Lagos. Its Embassy in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia is accredited to Nigeria, along with Djibouti, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Uganda, Seychelles, Senegal and Rwanda.

For work, you rarely need the embassy at all. The Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) is for people with a job offer from an accredited employer, and that employer sends you a link to the online application form. Immigration New Zealand also says it never asks for visa fees to be paid into a bank account: it accepts debit or credit card payment on its forms, or payment at an approved Visa Application Centre.

Once you have a New Zealand visa, its Visa Verification service confirms whether it is real. Our explainer on the New Zealand AEWV walks through the job offer, cost and processing steps.

Already abroad? The Nigerian High Commission in Canberra

The direction flips once you land. Nigerians in the diaspora submit passport applications at the nearest Nigeria Embassy, High Commission or Consulate. For Nigerians in New Zealand, the Nigerian High Commission accredited to New Zealand is in Australia, at 26 Guilfoyle Street, Yarralumla.

That is worth knowing before you travel. If your international passport is close to expiry, renewing it in Nigeria first is usually simpler than dealing with a mission in another country. Our breakdown of the international passport fee in Nigeria for 2026 compares the two booklets for a long work move.

A police certificate follows the same logic. Home Affairs says applicants outside Nigeria get a fingerprint form that is scanned and sent back to Nigeria for analysis, and that mailed requests are not an effective way to get a Nigerian police certificate. Its advice is to get one on your next visit, or ask a friend or relative to visit the Central Criminal Registry in person.

How to get an Australian visa question answered, step by step

  1. Log in to ImmiAccount and read every message on your application first. Many questions are answered by a request or update already sitting there.
  2. Check the official page for your visa on the Home Affairs website, not a forwarded screenshot or a WhatsApp voice note.
  3. If you still need help, call the Global Service Centre on +61 2 6196 0196 with your reference number and passport ready.
  4. If Home Affairs asks for biometrics, a medical or a police certificate, follow the instructions in that request and use only the clinics and portals it names.
  5. When the visa is granted, check it in VEVO before you book a flight or resign from your job.
  6. If someone contacts you claiming to represent the High Commission with a job or visa, stop and test the message against the High Commission's own rules before you reply.

On that last step, the High Commission's warning is blunt: "No Australian Diplomat or Australian Border Force Special Agent will contact you offering jobs or visas." Our guide to testing a fake Australian job offer email shows the checks line by line, and the Home Affairs visa scams page lists the official warning signs.

Where your japa effort really belongs

Because the High Commission does not issue visas, it also cannot find you a job. On the employer-sponsored route, the job comes first and the visa follows, so your time is better spent on the application an employer will actually read.

That means an English CV that matches the role. If you need to rebuild yours for an Australian or New Zealand employer, Build AI CV helps you lay it out the way those employers expect. If the visa or employer asks for an English test such as IELTS or PTE, PractiseNow lets you practise before you book.

Then look at roles where the employer has said it will sponsor. Our IT and technology jobs in Australia and New Zealand and community services jobs are two places to start, and the documents needed to relocate from Nigeria guide lists the paperwork to start now.

Common mistakes Nigerians make with the High Commission

  • Travelling to Abuja to "submit" a visa. There is nowhere to submit it. Australian visas are lodged online in ImmiAccount.
  • Treating the Lagos honorary consul as a visa office. The High Commission states the Honorary Consul does not process visa requests.
  • Paying someone with "embassy connections". Only Home Affairs decides a visa, and it warns that people who commit visa fraud through a scam agent risk refusal or cancellation and a ban from Australia for up to 10 years.
  • Calling the emergency line about visa delays. The Consular Emergency Centre is for emergencies; visa questions go to the Global Service Centre.
  • Looking for a New Zealand embassy in Nigeria. Nigeria is covered from Addis Ababa, and AEWV applications start from the accredited employer's link.
  • Paying New Zealand visa fees into a bank account. Immigration New Zealand never asks for that.
