New Zealand Graduate Work Visas from November 16, 2026: Eligibility, Deadlines and Limits

News · 2026-09-23 · 4 min read

Two visa changes take effect in New Zealand on November 16, 2026, and both matter to international students who want to work after graduating. The first is a new Short-Term Graduate Work Visa. The second is a wider Post-Study Work Visa (PSWV). Together they will open a legitimate employment route to thousands more graduates. If you are studying in New Zealand now, or plan to, these are the facts you need, along with the deadlines you cannot afford to miss.

The problem these changes target

Many graduates at diploma and certificate level have long been qualified and ready to work but had no visa pathway that fitted their level of study. This update is aimed squarely at that gap. It also modernises the process: all applications move onto Immigration New Zealand's enhanced Immigration Online platform. Whether you finish in a few months or have just started your course, your post-study plan could be shaped by what follows.

Route 1: a new short-term visa for graduates

The Short-Term Graduate Work Visa is a fresh category for graduates whose qualifications previously gave them no work visa option. It grants up to six months of open work rights, which you can use to look for work, build local experience and possibly move to an Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV).

Conditions you must meet:

  1. You have completed a New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework (NZQCF) qualification at level 5–7.
  2. You studied full-time in New Zealand for a minimum of 24 weeks.
  3. You do not already qualify for a PSWV.
  4. You can prove you have at least NZD 5,000 available.
  5. You have never been granted this visa or a PSWV.
  6. If you studied under the New Zealand Scholarship Programme, you have sign-off from MFAT or Education New Zealand (where applicable).
  7. You have medical and chest X-ray clearance, if required for your length of stay.

Who is excluded and what is not allowed: graduates of English-language, foundation and bridging courses are not eligible. You cannot own a business on this visa, and your family cannot be included as dependents of the visa holder. They can, however, apply separately as visitors or under other categories.

Deadline warning: you must lodge within three months of your student visa expiring. Anyone whose student visa expired before August 16, 2026 is already outside the window. This is a single-use grant with no renewals, so there is no second attempt.

Route 2: wider PSWV access with a Graduate Diploma

The PSWV already exists; what has changed is who can get it. Graduates of an NZQCF level 7 Graduate Diploma can now qualify, as long as they also hold a bachelor's degree. That degree can come from New Zealand or abroad, and it does not matter when it was awarded.

You will need:

  • Full-time enrolment for the entire Graduate Diploma; cross-crediting and recognition of prior learning are not accepted
  • A genuine bachelor's degree certificate showing the qualification type and the institution
  • An official academic transcript

Overseas bachelor's degrees will not require a separate International Qualification Assessment. Note, though, that Immigration New Zealand keeps the right to verify that your documents are authentic, so submit only genuine papers.

Duration and limits: the visa length matches how long you studied the Graduate Diploma, up to one year, and the PSWV is granted only once. If you have held one before, you cannot get it again, even with additional qualifications. On the positive side, and in contrast to the Short-Term visa, PSWV holders can bring partners and dependent children, each on their own visas.

How applications will be lodged

From November 16, 2026, all applications for both visas must go through the upgraded Immigration Online platform, which is designed to offer better tracking and rules in line with current policy. Paper-based PSWV applications will end. Anything submitted on or before November 15, 2026 will still be processed under the old system; after that date, online is the only option.

Bottom line: timing decides everything

Application windows are strict, at three, six or twelve months after visa expiry depending on your pathway and course. Both visas are one-time opportunities, and eligibility often depends on decisions made long before graduation, such as whether your course was full-time and how the NZQCF classifies it.

If you are considering study in New Zealand or are already partway through a diploma or degree, check your visa eligibility now, not after you finish. And stay alert: eligibility rests on the official criteria above, so be wary of anyone who promises you a guaranteed visa in exchange for a fee.
