Quality Assurance Manager

Role: Quality Assurance Manager. Employer: an established Australian food processing organisation. Location: Newcastle, New South Wales.

The company wants someone who will strengthen its quality, food safety and compliance operations and take responsibility for quality outcomes. You will be expected to keep food safety systems, regulatory requirements, customer expectations and internal standards consistently on track, using genuine technical knowledge and sound judgement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead investigations into non-conformances, quality incidents and process failures, and drive corrective and preventive action processes to an effective close-out
  • Take overall charge of quality assurance and food safety at the site
  • Keep the quality management and food safety systems effective
  • Review Approved Arrangements and associated compliance processes, and improve them where needed
  • Keep the site compliant with applicable Australian food safety and regulatory requirements at all times
  • Coordinate the internal, customer and regulatory audit programs and maintain continuous audit readiness across operations
  • Run traceability exercises, verification programs and mock recalls, and keep quality documentation, records and compliance information accurate
  • Monitor production processes against the established food safety and quality standards
  • Lead the pre-operational, hygiene and process verification activities
  • Provide day-to-day leadership and technical direction to the QA team, coaching and developing QA personnel to lift quality performance site-wide
  • Build accountability among all staff and foster a positive culture around food safety
  • Identify where quality systems, processes and operational controls can be improved
  • Resolve quality and compliance issues together with the production and management teams
  • Support compliance with animal welfare requirements and applicable industry standards

Requirements & Eligibility

  • Qualification in Food Science, Food Technology, Agricultural Science, Quality Management or a comparable field
  • Professional background in quality assurance, food safety, compliance or food manufacturing, and practical knowledge of HACCP principles and food safety management systems
  • Track record of leading or supporting regulatory, customer or quality audits
  • Proven ability to trace non-conformances to their causes and fix them effectively, and experience managing corrective and preventive actions
  • Strong grasp of quality documentation, verification and traceability procedures, and the ability to hold high standards in a regulated production environment
  • Prior experience supervising, coordinating or developing quality personnel
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving ability, confident communication and stakeholder management skills, and the ability to collaborate with production and senior management teams
  • Food processing or export industry experience is advantageous; experience with meat processing, DAFF compliance or Approved Arrangements is highly regarded
  • International qualifications and professional experience that are relevant will be considered
