Marine Technician

An established marine service operation needs a Marine Technician / Outboard Motor Mechanic who can take responsibility for diagnosing, servicing and repairing marine engines. Genuine hands-on industry experience and technical confidence are what the employer is after.

This is for experienced tradespeople who can back up their qualifications, practical expertise and technical capabilities with evidence. Your experience counts most in engine diagnostics, mechanical repairs, marine electrical systems, commissioning and ongoing maintenance.

Expect workshop, mobile and on-water assignments as part of an experienced technical team, with exposure to modern marine technology and ongoing technical training. Mechanics from Nigeria and other countries with verifiable experience should study the requirements closely.

Key Responsibilities

  • Keep the workshop safe, organised and professional
  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, fuel and cooling faults on marine engines, using computerised diagnostic equipment and manufacturer-specific software
  • Service petrol outboards and other marine power systems, carrying out scheduled servicing and preventative maintenance
  • Fix engines, swap out components and complete mechanical overhauls
  • Dismantle, inspect and reassemble engines and their components, identifying defects and deciding on the right repair
  • Do engine tune-ups, tests and performance checks
  • Find and fix problems in marine starting, charging and electrical systems
  • Service and repair MerCruiser sterndrive and inboard systems when required
  • Install and configure outboard engines, controls, gauges and wiring, as well as marine electronics and accessories
  • Handle pre-delivery inspections and commissioning, then run sea trials to verify performance
  • Travel to customer sites for mobile servicing and repairs as required
  • Keep accurate job sheets, service records and technical documents, applying manufacturer specifications and repair procedures
  • Produce consistent, high-quality work on every assignment

Requirements & Eligibility

  • Must meet relevant New Zealand employment and immigration requirements
  • Relevant NZQF Level 4 trade qualification in marine, mechanical or a related field, or an equivalent overseas qualification
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience with internal-combustion engines, including demonstrated hands-on work on outboard or marine engines
  • Proven record of diagnosing engine faults and fixing them effectively
  • Strong practical knowledge of engine servicing and mechanical component replacement, plus experience with marine electrical and charging systems
  • Can use computerised diagnostic equipment and interpret manufacturer service manuals and technical specifications
  • Mercury outboard experience: highly regarded. MerCruiser experience: highly regarded
  • Knowledge of SmartCraft and DTS systems: advantageous
  • Marine manufacturer training or certification: an advantage
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving ability
  • Works independently and owns assigned jobs
  • Contributes positively within an experienced technical team
  • Serious about workplace safety and quality workmanship
  • Full driver's licence preferred. Employer sponsorship is available for suitably qualified overseas candidates
