Heavy Diesel Mechanic

What the work involves: servicing, repairs, diagnostics, maintenance and warranty jobs on heavy trucks, trailers and commercial vehicles. It is hands-on and technical, and it suits a mechanic who is proud of quality workmanship and likes solving complex vehicle problems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Follow safety procedures and every workshop requirement
  • Carry out routine servicing of heavy diesel vehicles
  • Complete mechanical repairs and maintenance work
  • Diagnose complex mechanical faults
  • Diagnose electrical and electronic faults on vehicles
  • Find the cause of each fault and recommend the correct repair, using the workshop's diagnostic tools and equipment
  • Repair or replace mechanical and electrical components
  • Work on trucks, trailers and heavy vehicles
  • Handle warranty repairs where required
  • Conduct preventative maintenance and safety inspections
  • Test vehicles and equipment after every repair
  • Make sure all repairs meet technical standards
  • Keep accurate records of work completed
  • Help other workshop team members when needed and keep the workshop clean to a high standard
  • Take part in technical training programs

Requirements & Eligibility

  • At least 5 years of practical experience as a heavy diesel mechanic
  • Certificate III in Heavy Commercial Mechanical Technology or equivalent
  • Proven experience servicing and repairing trucks and heavy vehicles
  • Strong skills in diagnosis and troubleshooting
  • Strong understanding of how heavy vehicle mechanical systems work
  • Experience across multiple heavy vehicle brands is desirable
  • Previous truck and trailer repair experience is highly regarded
  • Able to work alone or as part of a team
  • High attention to detail and a commitment to quality work
  • Strong safety awareness
  • Good communication and problem-solving skills
  • HC Licence: desirable
  • Automotive Air Conditioning Licence: desirable
