Fitter Welder
Trade · Christchurch Central, Canterbury, New Zealand · Full-Time · $35/hr
Christchurch Central, Canterbury. A growing engineering business in New Zealand needs a skilled Fitter-Welder with a solid workshop track record for a fabrication setting where no two jobs are the same.
This is not a learner role. Expect to be judged on what you can actually do in welding, fit-up, fabrication and assembly: grasping what each job needs, staying precise, making the right calls in the shop and turning out work that passes professional engineering standards.
Typical jobs include custom truck decks, crane installs, trailers, transport repairs and general engineering. Some come with detailed drawings; others depend on your own judgement. Have genuine records of your trade experience and employment history ready, as these must be verifiable.

- Carry out crane fit-outs and the fabrication work linked to them
- Do MIG and TIG welding on mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium, plus fabrication, fitting and assembly of components and structures
- Inspect finished jobs for finish, structural integrity and dimensional accuracy so all welding and fabrication meets the required quality standards
- Diagnose fabrication and repair requirements, find practical solutions and carry out transport, truck-body and general engineering repairs
- Complete short-notice, fast-turnaround projects in the workshop efficiently
- Work to applicable engineering and certification requirements and collaborate with engineers when inspection, certification or sign-off is required
- Work safely at all times and keep the shop professional
