Fitter / Turner and Welder

A Christchurch crane business wants a Fitter / Turner and Welder who can machine precise parts and produce certified welds with equal confidence. The company has been building, refurbishing and servicing cranes and lifting equipment across New Zealand since 2017. The job is full-time, based at its workshop, with support for field servicing.

Expect high standards. The team is tight, honest with customers and practical in its approach. On visas the requirement is simple, the legal right to work in New Zealand or willingness to go through the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) process, which is employer-sponsored.

Key Responsibilities

  • Get lathes, mills and drills set up and running.
  • Produce, rework and repair precision components for cranes.
  • Lay down certified welds and carry out structural fabrication in steel and aluminium.
  • Bring old cranes back to standard or build custom crane setups from scratch.
  • Track down mechanical faults and breakdowns, and keep mid-to-high-level lifting systems on preventative maintenance.
  • Keep strictly to New Zealand safety protocols, engineering standards and workshop guidelines.

Requirements & Eligibility

  • Trade Certificate in Mechanical Engineering (Fitting and Turning / Fabrication) or NZQA Level 4 equivalent.
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience post-qualification in heavy mechanical engineering, fabrication or plant maintenance.
  • Experience with cranes or hydraulics highly regarded.
  • Reads and interprets technical drawings and blueprints accurately, solves problems analytically and works proactively.
  • Legal right to work in New Zealand, or ready to undergo the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) process.
