Drainage Operators & Drainlayer

Experienced drainage and civil workers wanted in Otago, New Zealand. Employers are filling roles for Drainlayers, Drainage Operators, Drainage Labourers, 20T Excavator Operators and Multi-Skilled Operators with Class 4.

Let us be straight: an open vacancy is not enough on its own. Success here needs real experience, practical ability and the professional attitude to slot into a new crew and perform immediately. Expect big infrastructure jobs in wastewater, stormwater, drainage, utilities, earthworks and roading, plus general civil work, with plenty of variety for problem-solvers. Candidates are judged on genuine work history and skills, so be accurate about what you can actually do on site.

Key Responsibilities

  • Follow workplace health, safety and environmental procedures
  • Safely operate 20T excavators, loaders, compactors and other relevant machinery on civil sites
  • Dig, trench, backfill and prepare sites
  • Put in and look after sewer and stormwater drainage
  • Construct gravity and pressure drainage infrastructure and install pipelines with associated civil works
  • Take on work at wastewater pump stations and treatment sites
  • Assist with installing water treatment infrastructure
  • Complete PE welding where required, as well as approved confined-space work
  • Install power and telecommunications utility infrastructure
  • Undertake concrete construction, finishing, landscaping and site reinstatement
  • Work out what each project requires and meet the specification
  • Identify challenges on site and contribute practical solutions
  • Keep productivity up while meeting required quality standards
  • Cooperate with supervisors, operators, drainlayers and everyone else on site
  • Minimise unnecessary impacts on the environment and community, and keep equipment, work areas and sites to appropriate standards

Requirements & Eligibility

  • Candidates must have valid New Zealand work rights or meet the requirements for employer-supported visa sponsorship
  • Current and clean Class 2 driver's licence
  • Demonstrated work history in drainage, civil construction or a closely related field
  • Relevant hands-on experience as a Drainlayer, Drainage Operator, Excavator Operator or Drainage Labourer
  • Where applicable, proven experience on construction machinery
  • A Class 4 licence is advantageous
  • WTR endorsement: advantageous
  • Experience operating excavators, loaders, compactors or other heavy machinery: advantageous
  • Strong practical and technical understanding of construction, backed by demonstrated reliability and a professional work ethic
  • Can adapt to different projects and responsibilities and solve practical problems
  • Strong communication skills and a team-first approach
  • Safety-focused in all site activities and committed to quality workmanship
  • Can work consistently in a physically demanding construction environment and willing to relocate to Otago, New Zealand
  • Visa sponsorship available for suitable overseas candidates
