Chef wanted in Nelson. An established hospitality group needs an Asian Chef who can prove real practical expertise in professional food preparation and turn out consistent results in a busy commercial kitchen.

Key Responsibilities

  • Order and manage food supplies in line with kitchen requirements
  • Prepare and cook Asian dishes to the recipes and quality standards in place
  • Show practical knowledge of Asian cooking techniques and food preparation
  • Organise, plan and coordinate daily food preparation and cooking
  • Support menu planning and estimate food and labour costs
  • Monitor dish quality, consistency, portioning and presentation
  • Prepare sauces, ingredients and other service components
  • Operate commercial ovens, grills and other cooking equipment
  • Maintain correct cooking temperatures and food handling standards
  • Apply hygiene and food safety procedures without exception
  • Take special dietary requirements into account when preparing meals
  • Report kitchen issues, preparation concerns and quality problems to management and suggest practical improvements
  • Work closely with the kitchen and service teams in daily operations
  • Demonstrate correct cooking methods to other staff and assist with training and developing the kitchen team when required
  • Assist with preserving, freezing and storing food where needed
  • Keep the kitchen workspace clean, organised and efficient

Requirements & Eligibility

  • Relevant formal cookery qualification and/or a minimum of three years' relevant professional experience
  • Demonstrated professional experience in preparing Asian cuisine
  • Genuine hands-on cooking skills that you can demonstrate, and a strong understanding of commercial kitchen operations
  • Ability to reproduce dishes consistently to established recipes, with experience maintaining food quality and presentation standards
  • Understanding of food hygiene, food safety and safe kitchen practices
  • Ability to work effectively in a structured, high-performing team
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to follow instructions, procedures and established kitchen systems
  • A reliable and dependable approach to work
  • Professional, ethical conduct at work
  • Clear communication with managers and colleagues
  • Ability to stay composed and productive in busy service periods, and willingness to take responsibility and contribute to operational improvements
