Butchery Assistant Manager

A butchery department in New Zealand needs an experienced Butcher who is ready to carry more responsibility. Your hands-on background must be verifiable, and you should be ready to move past routine production into a senior role.

Working alongside the Butchery Manager, you will help keep the department running smoothly. That means protecting quality, supporting the team, serving customers well and making sure daily operations hit the expected standards.

This is a full-time permanent position. Practical skill, consistency and being trusted with responsibility are what build a strong butchery career, and this role rewards exactly that.

Key Responsibilities

  • Keep strict food safety, hygiene and workplace safety practices in place
  • Help the butchery department operate efficiently day to day
  • Apply established techniques for cutting, preparing, breaking down and packing meat
  • Make sure product presentation and quality are accurate and consistent
  • Guide colleagues daily and provide practical training
  • Assist in supervising staff and coordinating everyday workloads
  • Support stock rotation, ordering and wastage control
  • Serve customers professionally and build positive relationships with them, while monitoring the department's cleanliness and organisation
  • Work with the Butchery Manager to fix operational issues and maintain productivity

Requirements & Eligibility

  • Availability to work Tuesday to Saturday
  • Solid professional background as a Butcher
  • Proven hands-on knowledge of meat preparation and the different cuts of meat
  • Confident knife skills plus experience breaking down carcasses
  • Previous experience taking responsibility for staff is advantageous
  • Evidence that backs up your claimed work experience
  • A professional, reliable and accountable way of working
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills, plus the ability to work effectively in a team
  • Accuracy and quality maintained even under pressure
  • Strong understanding of food safety and workplace safety requirements
  • Able to satisfy the requirements of the relevant sponsorship pathway
