Boat Builder/Engineer/Alloy Fabricator

Role: skilled Welder and Fabricator for boat building in New Zealand. In short, you need proven aluminium welding and marine fabrication experience, plus dependable workshop experience you can demonstrate.

The workplace is a specialist manufacturing environment where high-performance aluminium boats are built and finished. You will work from engineering drawings and use fabrication equipment and professional welding techniques. Quality, precision and teamwork matter.

Key Responsibilities

  • Stick to workplace health and safety rules on every task
  • Weld aluminium with MIG and join other metals as needed
  • Work out what is needed from engineering and fabrication drawings
  • Get materials ready for fabrication: measure them, cut them and set them in position
  • Handle the boat-building side of the job, including fabrication, fitting and assembly
  • Run the workshop machinery (saws, shears, cranes, benders and similar) and use drills, grinders, squares, levels and other hand and power tools
  • Inspect every fabricated or welded part for accuracy and quality
  • Keep your welds to a steady standard and your workmanship professional
  • Leave tools, equipment and work areas clean and in order
  • Work with supervisors and fellow staff so production targets are met
  • Suggest ways to lift workshop processes, productivity and project results
  • Fill in time sheets and material requests, keep job paperwork complete, and raise any production, equipment or material problem with the right supervisor

Requirements & Eligibility

  • You must be willing to back up your skills and employment history with evidence
  • A proven professional background in welding, fabrication or boat building
  • Solid hands-on experience welding aluminium
  • MIG welding ability of a high standard
  • Experience across a range of metals and welding processes
  • The ability to read engineering drawings correctly
  • Practical familiarity with fabrication machines and workshop equipment
  • Experience handling engineering hand and power tools
  • Knowledge of safe workshop practice and occupational health and safety requirements
  • A sharp eye for detail and accuracy, and work that is consistently of high quality
  • Good practical fabrication and problem-solving skills
  • Comfort working alone or in a team, and a reliable, safety-conscious commitment to production standards
  • Willingness to work in Southland, New Zealand
